Bret Morgan

Bret Morgan

Well rounded Cardiff & Met Legend

President/ Chairmans intro

I’m pleased to include Bret Morgan in the Cardiff and Met Legends and welcome him on board. His profile below makes great reading for those who know him. I recall him as a young kid joining the club and playing in the junior sections .

He grew into a class act on the social scene as he got older and became a fine player too . Bret was an absolute scream and certainly street wise to say the least – I was naively unaware of what “snow “ and “mud “ were until he educated me back in the day .

As it turned out his mum Pat was the office secretary in a company I worked with years ago so I always had the “low down “ on his antics – and the stuff I knew about him was always kept away from her .

Top man then, Top man now !!

Biggest Influence on my game?

Howie Williams – To be learning from then playing alongside an ex GB player (and club legend)

Best Mate?

Steve Way – I have known Steve since the day I joined the club and we have been friends for over 40 years, godfather to my eldest son and my best friend!

What do you do now?

Living near York; work, family and golf take up my time. My 2 sons have both played hockey but never had the club attraction that Cardiff held. I try to get back to Cardiff 1-2 times a year to see people and top up my “Welshness!”

A Brief History

I joined Cardiff Hockey Club in 1982, aged 8 on the guidance from Tony Rhys-Jones (uncle) and Andy Rhys-Jones (cousin). Starting in Mini hockey, training initially was on the gorgeous grass pitches at Sophia Gardens before transferring to the Water Based Astro. Formative years playing alongside Owen Jones, Reece Jones, Ravi Kaler and Mark Shelton under the coaching of TR-J, Bill and then Dal Kaler.

I spent 15 amazing years at Cardiff moving up through the Men’s 4ths, 3rds, 2nds to a fantastic 1st XI (Howie, Gows, Sparksy, Nunnie, CJ, Percy and Way Way) before my career and family meant I was no longer able to play for the club that I had so many fond memories of. I continued playing for a further 4 years before moving to Yorkshire and retiring at the ripe old age of 27! Apart from a few “guest” appearances courtesy of “Shelts” to run out with my old mates, golf is my area of focus (and frustration) now!
